Salvador is the capital of Bahia, a city of over 2.2 million. Founded on March 29, 1549 on the Bay of All Saints, it was Brazil's first capital, holding the title for 214 years (1549–1763).
Bahia blends Portuguese, African and Asian influences. Much of its colonial architecture survives, giving the city the largest collection of Baroque art in South America. The Pelourinho — “Pelô” — is a beautifully preserved colonial quarter now full of restaurants, galleries, craft stores and churches.
Salvador is also a major center of African culture in Brazil, seen in its folk dances, crafts, festivals, religions and cuisine. Its coastline covers more than 386 square miles, with 56 islands in the bay and some of Brazil's most magnificent beaches.
